Yoga pants, Sweatpants, or Leggings
Ana - “Athleisure is leading the charge among consumers”, said Tanger CEO Stephen Yalof- in CNBC’s show Squawk on the Streets.
Viejas, I do not do sweats. Not even at home. Nothing wrong with sweats; just not me.
I do have a few yoga pants from when I used to take weekly dance lessons.
I have tried leggings in the past but found them unforgiving and hard to style.
That was until…one of my favorite designers from the 80s and 90s; Norma Kamali, came up with a pair of what I thought were the coolest leggings I had ever seen. So, they traveled home in a brown box.
As soon as I put them on I was disappointed. The fabric was very thin. The best feature was a cutout at the bottom of the legs which flares out.
What was I thinking?… I was never a legging person either. When my husband saw me in them he said: “Were you at it with the scissors again?” My sons thought they looked cool so I decided to keep them.
My mom used to say: “If you put it on your plate, you are going to eat it”. Sometimes, I would see something that looked good, I would put a serving on my plate, and then I did not like it. Then, my mom would start reciting:”Try it with ketchup, try it with mustard, try it like a sandwich, put lime on it”; and with each try I would eat the entire portion. Little did I know, I was styling the portion of unwanted food in my plate.
So I started to apply the same concept to my new my pair of leggings. After all, my mom also used to say: "You can say you do not like it, but not before you try it"
This photo shows one way I have come up with to style my new pair of Kamali leggings. I tried them with different garments I already have in my closet. They look kind of “funky” and hopefully a little sophisticated; don't you think?
Corina- I do not own yoga pants since I do not practice any type of yoga. Even though I probably did wear leggings in my 20’s, it is not a garment that I wear now or will ever wear again. In my opinion, leggings are just not flattering for someone with my body type. However, I do love a great pair of sweatpants and not just for lounging in the house. The unspoken rule of not wearing sweatpants outside the house is old fashion. Sweatpants are casual but they don’t have to be sloppy or make you look “lazy” if they are styled right. I like mine in neutral colors paired with my favorite sneakers and a T-shirt underneath a denim jacket or long coat. I also make sure to wear a great pair of earrings or a statement necklace, style my hair and apply lipstick. The older I get the more I crave comfort and easiness, but the last thing I want is to look like I just rolled out of bed or fell off the couch when I leave the house. Viejas, whatever fashion rule we break we want to make sure we put in the effort to pull it off!
