My 'Vieja' Crush....

Corina- For as long as I can remember mom dressed-up everyday even if she was just hanging out at home or going to the grocery store. People always described her as "linda" (beautiful) on the inside and the outside. As we mentioned in a previous blog -Mama Used to Say- she had presence, confidence, and a great sense of style well into her eighties.

My first Vieja crush was my mom. I love this photo of her walking down the aisle at Ana's wedding. She thought of every detail from the styling of her beautiful silver hair to the silver stiletto shoes.

When I think of women in the public eye, my biggest vieja crush is Helen Mirren. She has appeared in magazines and all over the internet for decades. She always looks fearless and edgy while at the same time elegant and classy. Mirren projects confidence, always seems to know what suits her and year after year nails the red carpet look. She is a style inspiration. This Helen Mirren's cat walk is one of my favorite style moments L'Oreal's Paris Fashion Week at 76 .

Ana- I could not pick just one crush. I have 4 vieja-chrushes. All of them have things in common about their 'personas' which I gravitate towards.

They have a sense of confidence on who they are: Each one of these four ladies project confidence. When I look at them, I feel empowered. When I see confidence, I see a Vieja with Style!

They look 'put together': No matter if they are wearing casual or look like they are going to an event; their style looks purposeful. It seems to me that they think about their style; even when it comes across effortless.

They have "transferrable style" (wait; did I just coin that?): Like transferable skills in the business world; these ladies have "transferable style". They can wear different styles of clothing (edgy, soft, classic) and they look good in all of them. They are not likely to be identified with just one look.

They have all rocked short hair at some point in their lives. I cut my hair short for the first time when I was fifteen against all conventions of beauty for latin american women. Short hair has been a way for me to show my style.

These women's style is : Versatile and powerful. My vieja-chrushes are: Robin Wright, Viola Davis, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jamie Lee Curtis.
