Everything Crochet

Corina – Viejas, did you know that there is Crochet Fashion Week (CFW)? During this event up and coming fashion designers display couture crochet fashion. There are multiple CFW events in different cities across the country and their Instagram has more than six million followers. I never thought about crochet as being fashionable. Growing up crotchet was about doilies, dish cloths and potholders. There was nothing related to these items that I wanted to wear. However, like many trends crochet has evolved beyond the granny square to elevated, stylish looks that I can easily get behind. For example, the open crochet for layering and a traditional stitch for a casual vest. I even tried to purchase a crochet bucket hat in NYC, but my family unanimously voted against the look. This summer at the top of the list across social media platforms the crochet pieces to wear are: pencil skirts, polo shirts, white maxi dresses, big bags, color block pieces and flower chokers. Viejas, which one will you wear?

Ana- If our goal is sustainable fashion, then we should all be wearing everything crochet all the time. As I read recently, crochet is the ultimate return to handmade, slow fashion.
I grew up watching both my moms crochet from tablecloths to baby clothes, hats, and even earrings. I am not sure which mom taught which how to crochet. For me, crochet has always been synonymous with a craft and I learned how to do it from my moms, but I was always too impatient to see my work through completion. At some point they always took over for me.
Watching my moms, I appreciated the intricate journey needed to create each piece. They found it therapeutic! I just thought it was beautiful.
Viejas, crochet is more than just a micro-trend. If you have a choice this spring, choose crochet from a small business over a manufactured garment. If you already have it, wear it proudly!
