Can I Wear That?
Ana- Viejas there is a beautiful thing that happens with age; at least it happened to me. That is; "nobody" owns my style anymore. I no longer say : "Oh I only go to Ann Taylor" as I am now confortable going into any store (of course within my means) even when I think there is nothing that I can possible like in there.
However, I do struggle with "Oh; that is too young, too bright, too short, too lose, too baggy, too tight, too sheer...for me".
Just this past December I tried a long sleeve sheer top. My skin and black bra was showing through and I said: "Oh, I can't wear that. I am too old for that"!. The store attendant said: "Sure you can; you have a nice body". I got mad at myself because I left the store without the top. I thought to myself: "Surely; she just wanted to sale me the top but I am really too old to wear that".
Then I realized that I would not have even wore it in my twenties because that is simply not what I feel confident in. "It was not an age thing. It was a empowerment thing". When I got home I opened my closet and was happy to see I have classic, funky, plastic, fur, bright, monochromatic, baggy and tight.
I do not want to ask myself anymore if I can wear that. I own it and I wear it, as long as I feel fierce and confident in it! The photo show some examples of a range of garments I edit as part of my style.
Corina- Not long ago, while shopping at one of my favorite stores a woman about my age was trying a pair of metallic, silver boots. She turned to me and asked if I thought she could wear them.
I smiled and shared with her that I often ask myself the same question: can I wear it, or better yet should I wear it? Is it age appropriate? Is it too young? Is it too old?
Viejas, want to guess my response? absolutely if you love them, buy them. It is how you wear them and what you wear them with that makes the difference.
This interaction reminded me of my own doubts over a pair of Steve Madden boots in a style that can be considered young. I loved them, I bought them and I often receive compliments when wearing them. Recently, a co-worker commented on how she wanted a similar pair but did not purchase them because she thought she was too old to wear them. However, she stated that now that she saw me wearing mine she was getting a pair. Viejas, styling is everything.
Love your boots!!!
